Disney Big Hero 6: Hag and Con talk to Director Don Hall (Co-Director with Chris Williams)
What was it like making a film from a Marvel comic and what was the hardest bit? Hag age 10
Well for me it was a dream come true. As a kid I loved Disney animation – but I also loved Marvel comics. This whole idea for the film came out of the passion for those two things – and to do an animated film based on something in the Marvel archives.
There are moments in this movie where I step outside myself my Forty-five year old self and watch through the eyes of that eight year old self.
If I was eight years old I would see it twenty times. I would be so into it.
The hardest thing was balancing all the tonal elements. There are moments of great humour in the film and really funny moments. The action scenes are spectacular – we try to make them different, so they all had a different time to them. But the emotional story is the most important part of the story and there are moments that are truly sad. And truly pull at your heart strings and to get all of that to be balanced correctly was probably the hardest thing.
Who do you think has the most awesome weapons in Big Hero 6 and why? Con age 7
Baymax! He can fly obviously….but the Rocket-Fist. That was based in a toy I had as a kid. My favourite toy.
I’m not sure if you had them here but it was a robot and his name was ‘Brave Raideen’. And he was essentially a Japanese robot, giant Japanese robot. Based on a Japanese Anime show – but in the States they packaged them all as ‘Showgun Warriors’. And ‘Brave Raideen’ had a Rocket-Fist that had an axe on either side and it was my favourite toy.
So when we were crafting Baymax and what would be the powers of the Mech suite – obviously flight. obviously Super strong…..but the idea of a rocket fist was just so tempting because it was my favourite toy as a kid.
What I love about the movie is that the rocket-fist starts off being sort of like……if you’re a kid inventor, what would you do?…. You would give this robot a rocket fist.
It has sort of a innocent value to it – it’s kind of fun and innocent and then as you get deeper in the movie it become a symbol of damage and hatred. And by the end of the movie it a a symbol of hope.
If you could upgrade yourself what would you look like and what powers would you have? Hag age 10
I’d probably look a lot like Baymax in a scene – because I’d love the ability to fly. I think it would be awesome to have the strength of Baymax and while I’m there give myself a Rocket-Fist (Laughs).
What would you do if you had a day with Baymax and where would you go? Con age 7
I’d split the day. Maybe spend the morning hanging out with the original nurse robot version of Baymax. Where would we go?
I think I’d just love to stroll along the park with Baymax. Maybe go get an ice cream. Just two pals hanging out in the park (Laughs).
But by the afternoon – we’re putting on that Mech suite. And we’re gonna go take a bus. Take a bus around London and see the sights.
And you know….we may use that Rocket-Fist on something. Nothing historic….I promise (Laughs).
If there’s a sequel – what would you like to see next? Hag 10
What’s interesting is we’ve had no discussions of a sequel. Yet – we’re gonna take a vacation and see what happens.
I will tell you – I have been pitched sequel ideas from my two sons.
They think the sequel is going to be ‘Dark Baymax’ coming out of the portal to fight good Baymax.
And they even titled it ‘Big Hero 6: Battle of the Baymax’s’
