The Book of Life – Hag & Con talk to Director Jorge Gutierrez
Why did you call the film The Book of Life and what does it teach you about life? Con age 7
The Book of Life is a living character in our film. And all our stories and adventures are written in its pages. The hope is that we live a life that will inspire others.
Have you ever had to fight for a girl and what did you do to win her love? Hag age 10
I had to “fight” my wife’s father in order to be able to marry her. He was a doctor and did not think an artist like me was worthy of his daughter. It took many years of me making cartoons for him to finally accept me. She also had to “fight” her family, which are all doctors, to convince them I was worthy.
Who’s your favourite character in the movie and why? Con age 7
I love Manolo for being such a humble, noble and earnest hero. He can play the guitar but also fight when he needs to. His super power is love.
If you was a Prince what would you do? Hag age 10
I would help all the needy and give my fortune away to charity. And I would turn my castle into an art and music school!
How tricky was it to make the film look like a book? Con age 7
It was super tricky! The look of our movie is very inspired by all the Mexican wooden toys I had when I was a little kid. The movie is what I imagined when I played with them.
What’s your favourite Guillermo del Toro film and why? Hag age 10
Pacific Rim! I love that Guillermo made it for the 10 year old kid that lives inside of him.
Have you ever fenced because we have? Hag and Con
Unfortunately I have never fenced but I can draw people fencing really well!
