National Literacy Trust – Hag talks to WWE Diva Layla El
At school did you ever have any awards for literacy – and if yes how does it compare with winning the Divas belt? (Hag age 9)
I never actually won any awards for literacy or anything, but of course they did have that in our school. It was more for the Kidz that had difficulty with things like dyslexia and things like that. I think year 12 or year 11 when I was voted in for Head girl that was really awesome and that surprised me.
At that time that was like winning the Divas Championship, because you feel special…you feel like wow…you feel loved by a lot of people. I guess winning the Divas championship was a little bit different because I worked so hard to get back in the ring after my injuries. To me it was just something that I….a year of just being like – I don’t think I’m gonna be able to get back in the ring. I don’t know if I can do it and regaining that was like…this is amazing…..I gonna enjoy this moment and I’m really grateful – very hopeful.
I really like writing stories at school and litre is my favourite lesson. When you went to school did you like it and what stories did you write? (Hag age 9)
When I was at school I absolutely did. I was a drama fanatic, drama was one of my favourite classes so we had to do….for GCSE…we had to write a play. An actual play and I wrote…it was about war..about peace…about fights between couples. It was just basically about positives and negatives…any kind of confrontation in situations. I loved writing, I really did – but I actually preferred reading.
I used to read Christopher Pike books. He’s an American author – I used to read those a lot. That actually gave me the idea and my imagination……that I could come out her and live in the States. So it had a huge impact on my life reading.
What’s the best book you’ve read recently and what was the best as a child? (Hag age 9)
Yeah I would say…it was Christopher Pike when I was younger and it was four books – it was a series. And it was called ‘The Graduation’.
The best book I’ve read right now ……..I like to read a lot of self help books. Inspirational books….so…I’m trying to think what was the last one I read?
Well ‘Secret’ I read…I absolutely loved that – I love books like that. I think it was ‘Total Confidence’ or something. It was like a Doctor Anthony book I just read and I loved that….it was one of my favourites.
If you wrote a book about winning the Divas belt – what would it be called? (Hag age 9)
Wooo…haaa..That’s a good one actually. I would have to say something like….I’d have to say…I know, being a wrestler…I’m in a male dominated sport. So I’d have to put something that’s independent as a woman. I’d say ‘Breaking the Barriers’
I like that – ‘Breaking the Barriers’ (Laughs). That will be coming out soon – by Layla (Laughs)
Who would you say is the best writer out of all the WWE Superstars and Divas? (Hag age 9)
Who’s the best writer? Ohhh…Santino, by far!!
Santino – he makes you laugh……so I’m gonna say Santino because sitting down with him for a long drive in a small conversation, he will tell you a story or two. It’s pretty good.
WWE have teamed up with the National Literacy Trust and their brand new campaign, ‘Books about Town’. NLT are placing benches around London that have each been designed by a famous kids author or artist, and WWE have sponsored Cressida Cowell’s ‘How To Train Your Dragon’ bench.
