Do you think there are other living creatures in space and what do you think they look like?
The universe is so massive that’s it’s pretty much guaranteed there are aliens out there, lots of them, probably. Whether they’ve got the technology to visit our planet, that’s another question. So maybe we’ll never meet any other beings. What do they look like… Good question! I’d like to think they won’t be like us. Lots of eyes and legs. Or maybe something we can’t really comprehend, like a cloud of shimmering stars. A completely different form of creature.
If you could be the ‘Chosen One’ from any Movie/TV franchise – who would you be and why?
Neo from The Matrix. He feels like the most chosen of all the chosen ones. We talked about Neo a lot when we were making Robot Overlords – Sean is our Neo. It’s a shame they made sequels to the first movie, because it ended at the end. Neo could see through The Matrix into the source code, he could fly, he could bend space and time. He was all powerful, a God. The end! They had to pretend there was more story to tell, because there wasn’t.
Sir Ben Kingsley is in Robot Overlords – What’s it like working with a Knight?
Pretty good, actually. He’s a VERY good actor indeed. Now I’ve worked with him it’s easy to see how he’s been nominated for four Oscars. He’s incredibly focused, and unusually talented. There’s some stuff with Ben that never found its way into the finished film, simply because it wasn’t important to a young audience. But it felt almost criminal to cut it out, it was so good.
Is the Robot Overlords TV Show going to start before the movie or after the movie and can you tell us something about it?
The TV show starts AFTER the movie – and not directly after it. I can’t tell you anything, really, it’s all top secret! Other than it’s looking very interesting. And Gillian Anderson will be back, I think, for a little cameo.
If Robot’s from another planet set one rule for the human race – what rule would you hate the most?
I think the rule we’ve got in the movie – “stay indoors”. I live near the beach and the forest and I love swimming, cycling, walking. I think I’d go stir crazy if I had to stay inside. It was one of the challenges of the film: getting the actors to understand how it would REALLY feel to be stuck in your home for three years. It’s a hard thing to imagine. Like being in prison, really, but with far less people!
