STORKS – Hag and Con talk to Award Winning Composers Mychael Danna & Jeff Danna
What was the first song you ever wrote for a movie? Con age 9
Mychael Danna – This is a funny story: The first score I ever wrote for a movie was while I was in college, it was for an education film. And I got fired, because they didn’t like my music! but I didn’t quit writing music, I kept trying and things started to get better, and years later I won an academy award for best music. Which shows that if you want something, if you work hard and don’t give up, you can succeed someday.
Jeff Danna – The first song I ever wrote for a movie was for a small Canadian film called “Cold Comfort”, which was a film I did with my brother when I was 21 years old. I wrote the song in my mom’s family room, because I was still living at home.
What was the first thing you did when you found out you were doing the music to Storks? Hag age 11
Mychael Danna – I have an 11 year old boy, so the first thing I did was tell him, and his 6 year old brother! It’s fun working on films that I know my kids will appreciate.
Jeff Danna – The first thing I did was have a Frappuccino to celebrate! And then we started to watch the film over and over again to get ideas for what kind of music we were going to write for STORKS.
Are there any musical instruments you wish you’d learnt? Hag age 11
Mychael Danna – Yes!! So many of them. But I wish I played cello most of all. Composers usually aren’t very good players, which maybe is why they write music for other really good musicians to play!
Jeff Danna – I wish I could sing! I was always musical, but I never had a good-sounding voice, like our dad did. My son is an excellent singer, and he sang in the choir for STORKS.
Storks bring parcels to people in the film not babies – what was the first parcel you remember receiving? Con age 9
Mychael Danna – Christmas presents, from my grandparent, who loved far away. And I remember that I was very interested in rockets, and sent letters to NASA, the space program agency in America, for information on their missions. They always sent me great packages full of interesting information about their rockets and astronauts. I always enjoyed getting those!
Jeff Danna – The first parcel I can remember receiving was my birthday present from my Gramma and Grampa who lived in Winnipeg when I was growing up in Toronto. She used to address my packages to “Master Jeffrey Danna ”
