The 5th Wave review by Hag
Out on DVD, Blu-Ray and Digital Download 23/5/16 (15/Rated 12A Theatrically) 4 Stars
Parent View:
Where to start with this film? Firstly the book series is aimed at Tweens/Young Teens. Secondly this film was released at the cinema as a 12A and 12A Theatricals once released on DVD/Blu-Ray then become 12 rated. With this is mind – why (When its exactly the same cut at the theatrical release) is The 5th Wave now a BBFC 15 rated film?
I’m not really a fan of the 12/12A rating anyway as it confuses parents too much – but realistically this is to my mind one of the few justified 12A movies along with Hunger Games and The Women in Black. So the DVD should carry a 12 rating now – not a 15. What happens if parents who took their kidz to see this film at the cinema start completely disregarding the rating system and start showing their Kidz 15 rated content they shouldn’t be watching regularly? As a rule 15 and 18 rated product should only be viewed by audiences that fall into those categories. But to safeguard the system and ensure parents abide by the rules they need to be shown consistency by the BBFC. Films like Star Wars and Avengers should be PG’s. Films like 5th Wave and Women in Black 12A’s. And if somethings a 12A at the Cinema – don’t up it to a 15 if its not a new cut of the movie. I was confused and I work in the business.
Hag has read the book, I feel he is able to deal with content (Which is quite hard hitting and dark at times) such as The 5th Wave and more importantly I would have taken him to see this film when it was released as a 12A at the cinema.
On a lighter note – this is a fab film and Hag really enjoyed it. The content is too old for Kidz under Ten/Eleven years old – but at the same time The 5th Wave is a bit too young for the 15 rated audience. A must own for Hunger Games and Divergent fans!!!

Hag: What’s the scariest alien and why?
Rick: From my popular culture……the scariest alien ever? Oh, its gonna be the alien in the movie ‘Alien’ – I mean come on.
That thing gave me nightmares! How could it be anything else.
Have you seen Prometheus? Don’t go see it(laughs in the audience).
…its a bizarre film. OK, I tell you why…I don’t know if you’ve seen the film….but there’s this scene, where they’re on this planet – its sort of like, lets incubate the deadliest species in the universe kind of place….right. So its filled with kinds of nastiness…right.
So us humans go in and we’re so advanced and so smart that the men we get in there – two of the guys take off their air breathing things and start picking up these things(Laughter in the audience). It was at that moment that I was thinking – we deserve to die!! (Laughter in the audience)
We certainly have not evolved enough.
Dad: Why do you find the alien in ‘Alien’ so scary?
Rick: Whats not to find scary?!
Um…the fact that they incubate inside of you, That sort of things gross and scary.
The fact that have not one, but two sets of teeth – right. They have that mouth that comes over and then that little guy (Laughter in the audience as he shows with his hands what it looks like). As teenagers we all do through that don’t we?
We have that big mouth and then that little mean mouth (Laughter in the audience)
Its scary as it has acid for blood – then you see the second one (Aliens) and they have the people hanging up there and they’re waiting for the little egg to come out – its all that stuff.
